The Nashville Predators failed to grab its fifth win in six games on Friday against the Calgary Flames, but forward Eric Nystrom put in a performance that will be remembered for years to come. Nystrom became the first player in franchise history to score four goals in a single game. Goalie Devan Dubnyk will be facing his former team for the first time since the trade between the Predators and Oilers on January 15. The deal included forward Matt Hendricks going to Edmonton.

The Edmonton Oilers are coming off a 4-3 loss to the Phoenix Coyotes on Friday and averaging a league-worst 3.49 goals against this season. The month of January has been one to forget for the Oilers as the team have only won twice in 11 games. The team is also on six-game losing streak. The Oilers defeated the Predators back in November with goalie Ilya Bryzgalov in net for his only shutout of the season.

Predators Game Review, Jan. 24, 2014

Bryan Robertson

Eric Nystrom came out strong for the Nashville Predators, but the Calgary Flames stormed back to take the victory, 5-4 in a shootout.

Nystrom led off the scoring barrage less than two minutes into the game, but Calgary’s Mark Giordano tied the game up 1-1 with 16:27 left in the 1st period.

Nystrom scored the only two goals in the 2nd period. One goal was originally credited to forward Paul Gaustad, but ruled that Nystrom deflected the puck into the net for the score.  That pushed Nashville’s lead over Calgary 3-1 after two periods of play.

The Flames capitalized on the power play in the 3rd period, with goals by David Jones and Mikael Backlund. Nystrom scored his fourth goal of the game about halfway through the period. Nystrom became the first player in Predators franchise history to score four goals in a game.

The game went into overtime and eventually into the shootout. After stopping Calgary’s first attempt, Devan Dubnyk was unable to thwart Jiri Hudler’s shot, giving the Flames the early edge. Defenseman Roman Josi kept the Predators alive, but Sean Monahan answered. Backup Calgary goaltender Reta Berra made the pad save with his right leg to stop Ryan Ellis from continuing the shootout, giving the Flames the win.

Despite the loss, Nystrom’s performance earned him the first star of the game, according to NHL.com.

Calgary made the comeback possible thanks to a good power play offense. The Flames converted three of five opportunities, including two in the 3rd period alone. Goalie Reto Berra played very well, giving up one goal in 13 shots faced and making the pad save against Ellis to seal the win. Berra filled in for starter Karri Ramo after Ramo gave up three  goals in 12 shots.

Nashville played well defensively, limiting scoring chances whenever Calgary had the opportunity. On the power play, however, the Predators was only able to kill two of Calgary five opportunities with the man advantage. Dubnyk had a solid night going until giving up three goals in 15 shots faced in the 3rd period.

The Predators have earned points in five of their last six games, and it’s the first shootout loss for the team since falling 2-1 to the Ottawa Senators on January 11. Nashville will take on the Edmonton Oilers on Sunday night, the third game of four through western Canada.

The Flames have won their last two home games after losing a franchise worst seven at home. It’s the first time since December 12-14 that Calgary has won back-to-back games. The Flames will take on the defending Stanley Cup champion Chicago Blackhawks on Tuesday night, the third game of a five game home stand.

It’s Time for the Return of the Southwest Conference

Bryan Robertson

Southwest_Conference_logo[1]

As the 2013 college football season starts to wind down, fans are not even thinking about the most dreaded word in the sport. Not those infamous letters BCS, but realignment. College football fans are tired of hearing talk of which school has accepted an invite from a big time conference. While I think that realignment has gone too far at times, I think the resurrection of a notable conference would help college football.

Enter the rebirth of the Southwest Conference. The conference dissolved in 1996 which led to the birth of the conference that replaced it, the Big 12 Conference. The conference had some of the biggest teams in college football, including Texas, SMU, and Arkansas. Arkansas left the SWC for the greener pastures of the Southeastern Conference in 1992, joining South Carolina in the process.

A few short years later, four of the larger schools in the Southwest Conference merged with the then Big Eight Conference, which included the likes of Nebraska and Oklahoma, to create the present-day Big 12 Conference.

Recently, many of the Big 12 that started the conference in the mid-1990s left for other conferences. Nebraska, a perennial football powerhouse, was the first to leave the conference for the Big Ten. Colorado, a team that did not have very much success in the conference, left for the Pac-12 Conference. Missouri and Texas A&M joined the SEC shortly after that. The conference was left with only eight members and started sending out invitations to other schools to join the conference. Eventually, Texas Christian University, a school that originally accepted an invite to the Big East Conference, joined the Big 12 along with West Virginia, which left the Big East.

In the next few years, realignment among conferences will take place. The Big Ten will be adding Maryland of the Atlantic Coast Conference and Rutgers of the American Athletic Conference in 2014. Some of the smaller conferences, such as Conference USA, will be swapping members with each other.

The Southwest Conference should return for the sake of the Big 12 and for one reason. A conference championship game for football. When the Big 12 was left with ten schools, they were, and still are, unable to have a conference championship game because the NCAA only allows conferences that have at least 12 schools to have one. The SEC was the first to have one after Arkansas and South Carolina joined in the early-1990s.

Another reason for the return of the SWC would be for the teams that want to be in the conversation for the selection of the BCS bowl games, like the Big 12’s  current automatic bid to the Fiesta Bowl.

If the Southwest Conference is to be formed in either this offseason or next offseason, here is the structure that they should be in:

North Division

Kansas, Kansas State, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, SMU, and TCU

South Division

Baylor, Houston, Louisiana Tech, Texas, Texas Tech, Rice

Some of you will be questioning the inclusion of Louisiana Tech and Rice. The reason for the inclusion of Rice is because they were originally part of the old Southwest Conference. Louisiana Tech’s inclusion would help the conference when in comes to television coverage, as the school would be able to pull in the New Orleans market.

Now, that will leave some schools without a conference. Iowa State and West Virginia could join the Big Ten, mainly due to the geographic locations of those schools, and Iowa State will be with its natural rival, Iowa. That will leave the Big Ten with 16 schools. The AAC and C-USA will lose membership of their respective conferences, but they can easily fill those spots with other schools who want to move up into a better conference.

The upside to the rebirth of the conference is that the powerhouse teams can stay together and play each other every year, such as Oklahoma-Texas, Houston-Rice, Kansas-Kansas State, etc. The downside to this is basketball. Kansas has historically been the best school within this group to be good in the sport year-in and year-out. While Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas State, and Houston have produced NBA All-Stars, they do not have the sustained success in college basketball as Kansas.

When in comes to the conference title game, it should be at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. The reason for this is the location of the stadium in relation to the schools in the conference.

att-stadium-section-423-view[1]

The return of the Southwest Conference would bring old memories of how good the conference was during its heyday, including those ugly memories that probably led to the demise of the original conference. The current Big 12 cannot hold a conference game, but this new SWC can. If those schools want one, this is the way to do it.

NBA Predictions

Derrick Griggs

The NBA season is officially upon us as the Miami Heat and Chicago Bulls have tipped off what should be an excellent NBA season. What better way to start off the season than one of the best rivalries in the NBA. These two teams hate each other and they won’t beat around the bush telling you otherwise. It is also great to see Derrick Rose return after his year off recovering from his devastating injury, he should be a threat to win his 2nd MVP.

Before I get into my predictions, I want to take a moment and thank everyone as this is the 1st official blog post for us here at the Sports Express and soon we will start-up a YouTube page, where we will bring you a weekly sports show, discussing the hottest topics in sports.

But anyways on to my predictions:

MVP:

images

Lebron James has won four out of the last five MVP awards and the reason he didn’t win five in a row is because of Derrick Rose. Rose is 100% healthy now and looks like the player  we saw before his injury. He is one of the most exciting players to watch and his presence back on the court will make the Bulls a legit contender for the title.

Rookie of the Year:

download (1)

There is not a clear-cut favorite this season among the rookies, but I like what Victor Oladipo brings to the table for the Orlando Magic. He is a physical specimen that will be a great defensive player to start off. His shot looks improved and the move to PG should do nothing, but improve his game. Oladipo looks to be the future of the Magic organization.

Defensive Player of the Year:

download (2)

Speaking of the Orlando Magic, their former star Dwight Howard has found himself a new home after playing in L.A. The move to the Houston Rockets should be nothing but a positive as it gets him out of the limelight and should let him just focus on basketball. While with the Magic Howard was a defensive monster and now that he should be back to full health look for him to become the inside force he once was.

Most Improved Player:

download (3)

Eric Bledsoe is entering his 4th season in the NBA and has found a new home in the Phoenix Suns. The move to the Suns places Bledsoe in his first starting role after he backed up one of the best PG in the game Chris Paul. Bledsoe put up great numbers last season, while filling in for an injured Paul and I expect him to pick up where he left off.

Sixth Man of the Year:

images (2)

Jarrett Jack has been a journeyman of the NBA, but he has finally found his home in the Golden State Warriors. Jack played a big role for a Warrior team that surprised many backing up starter Stephen Curry. Last season Jack finished 3rd in the voting behind winner J.R. Smith and Jamal Crawford. Look for him to surpass them both to win the award this season.

NBA Finals:

download (4)download (5)

This was my prediction for the NBA Finals with the Oklahoma City Thunder beating the Miami Heat. It looked like the series might happen up until Russell Westbrook went down with injury. Instead it would be the San Antonio Spurs facing the Heat in the Finals with Miami winning their 2nd in a row. I expect Miami to make the Finals again this year beating out the Chicago Bulls in the Eastern Conference, while the Thunder will face the Spurs in the Western Conference. I predict the Thunder to win their 1st NBA Finals in Game 7 against the Heat.
